Deleted Scenes: The Real Dirty Dancing Ending

Confession: I have about three different DVD editions of Dirty Dancing. It’s my favorite movie! I also believe it’s the best YA love story of all time. It has all the components. A heartthrob boy, a girl who needs to come out of her shell, a quirky family, and conflicts and misunderstandings up the wazoo.

Oh, and a perfectly developed romance!

I’ve seen it hundreds of times. But I was thinking about something kind of interesting the other day. On the last edition I purchased (I think it was the Keepsake Edition) there are a bunch of deleted scenes.

Deleted scenes are always fascinating to me. I’m not 100% sold on watching/reading them. Sometimes I just like to live with what I was meant to be given. Extra ideas and choices make me squirmy and cause me to overanalyze. But we all have stuff that doesn’t make the cut in our writing. I personally keep a folder titled “scraps” for deleted things I really liked but didn’t need for the novel. Would I want people to read them someday? Maybe!

Anyway, there was one deleted scene from Dirty Dancing that always left me a little

If you’ve never seen the movie, let me just tell you there is a pretty big open ending. The ultimate question is: will they keep in touch? or was this just a summer romance?? The general consensus among fans is that yes, it was just a summer romance.

Well, guys, if you have an embarrassing amount of editions of this movie like me, then you know the truth as well as I do. It wasn’t written to be just a summer romance.

Don’t believe me??

I mean…seriously?? When I first saw this scene years ago I nearly fell down.

From an artistic standpoint…I GET IT. I really, truly get why this was cut.

For starters, the dialogue breaks up the flow of the simplistic, romantic ending of music and dancing and swaying and lifts. Plus, we all know as writers that sometimes it’s fun to let your audience use their imaginations.

But from an obsessive fan of Dirty Dancing viewer standpoint?? WHY WOULDN’T YOU INCLUDE THIS IN THE FILM WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY???!! ARE YOU CRAZY??? THIS CHANGES MY WHOLE BELIEF SYSTEM AS I KNOW IT.

For like ten years I was under the assumption that they go their separate ways after their final dance. Johnny takes off into the night and Baby goes to the Peace Corps. End of story. But that’s not the case, obviously. They stay together, guys! They probably get married and have kids and go back to Kellerman’s every year for their anniversary!

Or at the very least, they try to stay together.

So what do you think?? If you’re a fellow Dirty Dancing fan, do you think this scene was better left on the cutting room floor?? Or would it have been a wise choice to give us closure and include it??

Where do you stand on deleted scenes in general??
